PIA (Primary Insurance Amount)

The Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) is the base monthly benefit you are entitled to receive from Social Security Disability Insurance before any adjustments. SSA calculates it by applying a three-part weighted formula to your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME). The formula replaces a larger share of earnings for lower-wage workers, so benefits are progressive by design.

Your PIA also drives what eligible family members can receive as auxiliary benefits, since spousal and child payments are set as percentages of your PIA subject to a family maximum. Cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) are applied to the PIA each year. Unlike retirement benefits, SSDI paid at your PIA is not reduced for claiming before full retirement age.
