Medicare Waiting Period

The Medicare waiting period is the 24-month span an SSDI beneficiary must generally wait before Medicare coverage begins. The clock runs from the first month you are entitled to SSDI cash benefits, which itself starts after the five-month SSDI waiting period, so Medicare often begins roughly 29 months after your established onset date. Enrollment in Parts A and B is automatic at that point.

There are two major exceptions: people with ALS get Medicare with no waiting period, and people with end-stage renal disease qualify under special rules tied to dialysis or transplant. Because back-dated entitlement counts toward the 24 months, claimants approved after long appeals sometimes reach Medicare eligibility immediately. SSI recipients typically receive Medicaid instead.
