Treating Source

A treating source is a physician, psychologist, or other acceptable medical provider who has an ongoing treatment relationship with you, as opposed to a one-time examiner or a file reviewer. For claims filed since March 2017, SSA no longer gives automatic controlling weight to treating source opinions; instead, every medical opinion is weighed for its supportability and its consistency with the overall record.

Even under the newer rules, treating sources remain highly valuable because they can document your condition over time, order objective testing, and explain specific functional limitations with clinical support. A detailed, well-explained opinion from a long-time provider that cites examination findings is far more persuasive than a checkbox form, and gaps in treatment are a common reason claims fail.
