Medical Expert (ME)

A medical expert (ME) is an impartial physician or psychologist whom an Administrative Law Judge may call to testify at a disability hearing. The ME does not examine you; instead, they review the entire medical file and answer the judge's questions about diagnoses, severity, whether the evidence meets or equals a Blue Book listing, functional limitations, and the likely onset date of disability.

Judges often call MEs in claims involving complex medical issues, conflicting records, or questions about when a condition became disabling. Your representative may cross-examine the ME and point to records that support greater limitations. Favorable ME testimony that your condition equals a listing can lead directly to an approval, so engaging with this testimony carefully is important.
