Consultative Examination (CE)

A consultative examination (CE) is a medical exam that SSA schedules and pays for when the evidence in your file is insufficient to decide your claim. The exam is performed by an independent physician or psychologist under contract with the state Disability Determination Services, not by SSA employees, and it may include physical testing, mental status evaluation, X-rays, or lab work.

CE reports are often brief, based on a single visit, and less detailed than records from your own providers, which is one reason ongoing treatment with your own doctors carries more weight. Attending the CE is essential: failing to appear without good cause can result in a denial for failure to cooperate. Arrive on time and describe your symptoms honestly and completely.
