Trial Work Period (TWP)

The Trial Work Period (TWP) is a work incentive that lets SSDI beneficiaries test their ability to work without losing benefits. You can work for nine trial work months, which do not need to be consecutive, within a rolling 60-month window, and you keep your full SSDI check no matter how much you earn during those months. In 2026, any month with earnings over $1,220 counts as a trial work month, a threshold adjusted annually.

After the nine months are used, a 36-month extended period of eligibility begins, during which you receive benefits for any month your earnings fall below the substantial gainful activity level. Reporting your work activity to SSA promptly is essential to avoid overpayments.
